Health & Dental Plans
Choosing a health plan can be a rather complicated task so you are going to want to put some real thought into it. Of course if you are one of the those lucky people who gets their health insurance provided for them by their employer than you really don't have a decision to make, you will probably just go with the plan that you are offered. If you are one of the many people who is responsible for their own insurance things will be a lot more complicated.
The big thing that you are going to have to decide on when you are choosing a health plan is how much medical care you are likely to need. This will affect the amount that you have to pay out of your own pocket. In general the larger your copayment the less your premiums will be. If you are young and in good health you will want to go with a plan that has a high copayment since you won't be making a lot of doctor's visits and it will keep your premiums down. For older people or those with chronic health problems it will be a good idea to go with the higher premiums to keep the copayments down.
The other big thing that you have to make sure of when you are choosing a health plan is that any of the medical conditions that you are likely to have will be covered by it. This is especially important if you have a pre-existing condition. You have to make sure that your policy will cover this. Most of them will have a waiting period before coverage starts but some policies won't cover any pre-existing conditions.
When you are choosing your health plan you are also going to want to think about supplemental coverage. This will cover the things that are not normally covered by a regular health plan. The biggest reason that you would want this coverage is for prescription drugs. Medications are very expensive and if you have to pay for them out of your own pocket it will cost a fortune. Supplemental coverage will also cover things like eye exams. It is a good idea to get this coverage as long as the price of it is not too high.
Dental plans are a lot easier to decide on than health plans. The main reason for this is that they are so much less expensive. A lot of the decisions that you will have to make will be the same as for the health plan. Things like the amount that you pay out of pocket and which procedures are covered and which aren't. In large part this will depend on the state of your dental health. If you already have a dentist you will need to find a dental plan that he accepts or look into switching to a different dentist.
